Bebe Barron (June 16, 1925 – April 20, 2008) and Louis Barron (April 23, 1920 – November 1, 1989)
were two American pioneers in the field of electronic music.
They are credited with writing the first electronic music for magnetic tape,
and the first entirely electronic film score for the MGM movie Forbidden Planet (1956).
The couple married in 1947 and moved to New York City.
The first electronic music for magnetic tape composed in America
was completed by Louis and Bebe in 1950 and was titled Heavenly Menagerie.
MGM producer Dore Schary discovered the couple and hired them on the spot
to compose the musical score for Forbidden Planet.
The Barrons' electronic composition is credited with being the first completely electronic film score,
preceding the invention of the Moog synthesizer by eight years (1964).
Using ideas from the book Cybernetics: Or Control And Communication In The Animal And The Machine (1948)
by the mathematician and electrical engineer Norbert Wiener,
Louis Barron constructed his own electronic circuits that he used to generate the score's "bleeps, hums and screeches". Most of these sounds were generated using an electronic circuit called a "ring modulator".
After recording the basic sounds, the Barrons further manipulated the sounds by adding other effects,
such as reverberation and delay, and reversing or changing the speeds of certain sounds.
Since Bebe and Louis Barron did not belong to the Musicians Union,
their work could not be considered for an Academy Award, in either the "soundtrack" or the "sound effects" categories.
MGM declined to publish a soundtrack album at the time that Forbidden Planet was released.
However, film composer and conductor David Rose later published a 7" single of his original main title theme
that he had recorded at the MGM Studios in Culver City during March 1956.
His main title theme had been discarded when Rose, who had originally been hired to compose the musical score in 1955, was discharged from the project by Dore Schary.
The Barrons finally released their soundtrack in 1976 as an LP album for the film's 20th anniversary,
on their own Planet Records label (later changed to Small Planet Records and distributed by GNP Crescendo Records).
The LP was premiered at MidAmeriCon, the 34th World Science Fiction Convention, held in Kansas City,
as part of a 20th Anniversary celebration of Forbidden Planet.
The Barrons were there promoting their album's first release, signing all the copies sold at the convention.
A decade later, in 1986, their soundtrack was released on a music CD for the film's 30th Anniversary,
with a six-page color booklet containing images from Forbidden Planet,
plus liner notes from the composers, Bebe and Louis Barron, and Bill Malone.

Jääportit ‎– Kauan Koskematon (1999)

Country: Finland

Tracklist
1. Askeleet Valottomuuteen 05:42

3. Unohdetut Lumouksen Unelmat 04:32
4. Kauas 04:23

6. Talvenkaltainen 07:33
7. Hänen Jäätävä Katseensa 06:41
8. Kohtalon Sinetti 01:36

Jääportit was started by Tuomas M. Mäkelä as his solo project in the northern parts of Finland in 1997.
First demo “Halki Lumisen Metsän” was self-published in 1998 as a limited to 50 handmade CDR's.
In 1999 the limited to 500 copies cassette album “Kauan koskematon” was released by the Finnish label Noitavasara, introducing the music style of Jääportit, creating dreamy synth/ambient/neo classical, in the vein of Mortiis and Arcana.
This release also featured artwork cover done by Aslak Tolonen from the Finnish band Nest.
Next album “Uumenissa” (Firebox Records, 2004) contained dreamful frostbitten ambient music,
painted with soothing electronic synthwaves, atmospheric and cosmic sounds.
The 3rd full-length Jääportit album “Avarrus” (Epidemie Records, 2006) kept on the line of musical experiments
as it had more rhythmic elements, electronic beats and percussion, than the earlier releases.
Jääportit released its 4th full-length album entitled “Voimasuo” in 2009 as a
CD Digipak by Epidemie Records.
This wide-ranging album introduced another metamorphosis of Jääportit
as combination of ambient electronica with the touch of frosty post-rock flavours.
The latest fifth full-length Jääportit album titled as “Jääportit” was released in 2018.
For this album, Tuomas created everything by himself from composing music to designing album covers,
so as to maintain the aspect of loneliness and diy-spirit as it was back in 1997, when he started this project.
Only now guitar was more involved than before and all songs were built around guitar riffs.
Sound is less “dungeon synth” and more “post-rock” in a way.
Also in 2018 the Ukrainian label Old Captain released the "Halki Lumisen Metsän" and "Kauan Koskematon" records
for the first time on a compilation CD as a 6-panel matte-laminated Digipak, limited to 300 copies.

Coil were an English experimental music group, founded in 1982 by John Balance in London.
Initially envisioned as a solo project by lead singer and songwriter Balance (born Geoffrey Burton
while he was in the band Psychic TV, Coil evolved into a full-time project with the addition of Peter Christopherson,
a former member of pioneering industrial group Throbbing Gristle who became Balance's creative and personal partner.
Throughout the group's existence, Balance and Christopherson were the only constant members.
Coil worked in such genres as industrial, noise, ambient and dark ambient, neo-folk, spoken word, drone, and minimalism, treating their works more as magical rituals than as musical pieces
and becoming the forefront of European experimentalism and electronic music.
In 1985, the group began working on a series of soundtracks, among them music for the first Hellraiser movie
based on the novel The Hellbound Heart by their acquaintance at that time, Clive Barker.
Unfortunately Coil withdrew from the project when they suspected their music would not be used
as the production company wanted a more commercial soundtrack and Christopher Young was their man of choice.
Furthermore, Coil claimed inspiration for Pinhead was partly drawn from the PFIQ (Piercing Fans International Quarterly) magazines that director Barker borrowed from the group.
In 1987 the 10'' EP "The Unreleased Themes For Hellraiser" (subtitled "The Consequences Of Raising Hell") was released
with printed notes on sleeve by Clive Barker stating:
"The only group I've heard on disc, whose records I've taken off because they made my bowels churn."
The CD edition entitled "Hellraiser Themes" was released later in 1990 and featured three extra unreleased tracks.
With the passing of Balance on 13 November 2004 Christopherson decided that Coil would not continue.
Six years later Christopherson died in his sleep on 24 November 2010 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Vincent Leonard Price Jr. (May 27, 1911 – October 25, 1993) was an American actor,
known for his performances in horror films.
He identified with gothic horror and crazed villainy through a series of leading film roles in the 1960s

that were based on Edgar Allan Poe poems and short stories such as The Raven, The Fall of the House of Usher,
The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Masque of the Red Death all of them directed by Roger Corman.
Thanks to the actor's wide exposure in those movies and others like them, his voice became immediately associated

with the horror genre, opening the door for Price to contribute to a number of different recordings.
During the early 1970s, Price hosted and starred in BBC Radio's horror and mystery series The Price Of Fear.
He also recorded dramatic readings of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories and poems,

which were collected together with readings by Basil Rathbone.
Around 1975 he greatly reduced his film work, as horror itself suffered a slump, and increased his narrative and voice work.
His spooky laughter alone was enough to conjure all sorts of macabre thoughts and associations,

and his elegant diction only enhanced the effect.
A sampling of Price's contributions includes an appearance on Alice Cooper's "Welcome To My Nightmare" in 1975
and a guest spot on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in 1982.
Price's album,  "Witchcraft - Magic: An Adventure In Demonology", was released by Capitol Records.

4. Murder of God 06:04
5. The Final War 03:40

They all played in various bands before, so they all had some musical experience.
In the beginning Warlust also had a vocalist and a bass player,
but a couple of months later they left because of musical discord with the rest of the band.
The music Warlust plays can be described as fast and aggressive black metal,
with minor thrash and death metal influences, combined with slower but still powerful parts.
In January and February 1999 the band recorded their debut mini-CD "The Final War".
The MCD contains 5 songs of blackened war metal, and was released in July 1999 on Happy Holochrist Records.
The vocals on this recording are done by Lord Charagnanna (Charagnanna, Unshrouded Bitterness, ex-Sabbatical Goat),
who later became a permanent member in Warlust.
Shortly after Troll, another ex-member of Sabbatical Goat, joined Warlust on bass.
With this line-up Warlust recorded in 2001 their only full length album "Trench War" that was released in 2003.

Secret Discovery, alongside acts like Project Pitchfork, Deine Lakaien, Das Ich, Lacrimosa and Goethes Erben,
were not only a strong motor for the renaissance of the German gothic scene in the early Nineties,
but also forerunners of gothic metal made in Germany,
and their 1993 offering, "Into The Void" is still considered a genre classic.
From 1990 to 1994 the band released four albums and in 1995 they signed up to Gun Records
for the release of "A Question Of Time" album, which saw the light of day in 1996.
This was followed by appearances on the Out of the Dark festival with Moonspell, Crematory and The Gathering.
In 1996, the band went on a tour supporting Rammstein.
"Slave" appeared in 1997 and again used a tougher music style,
featuring a cover version of "Slave To The Rhythm" song from Grace Jones.
In 1999 before their dissolution, the compilation "The Final Chapter" was released featuring rare material and new songs.
After a successful final tour, the band split up.
In 2002, Secret Discovery reunited and "Pray", the reunion album, was released in 2004.
Several single gigs with Oomph!, Tiamat and Nightwish followed. Their last album "Alternate" was released in 2006.
The following tour was completed with Unheilig and also played at the Leipzig Wave Gotik Treffen
as well as the Blackfield Open Air in Gelsenkirchen and a concert in the Bochum KULT Club.

He lectures in sound design, soundtrack and electronic music at RMIT university,
previously having run the Dorobo record label.

The movement through a range of compositional techniques is inspired by historical reports
of a series of lethal atmospheric inversions, ranging from the killer fogs of London in the 1880's
through to the incidents at Union Carbide and Chernobyl.
As the album unfolds, bleak electroacoustic themes become more surreal,
ending up with conceptually inaccurate

Keiji Haino (灰野 敬二 Haino Keiji) born May 3, 1952 in Chiba, Japan, and currently residing in Kawagoe,
is a Japanese musician and singer-songwriter whose work has included rock, free improvisation,
noise music, percussion, psychedelic music, minimalism and drone music.
Haino's initial artistic outlet was theater, inspired by the radical writings of Antonin Artaud.
An epiphanic moment came when he heard The Doors' "When The Music's Over
and changed course towards music creating the improvised rock band Lost Aaraaf in 1970.
In the mid 1970s, having left Lost Aaraaf, he collaborated with psychedelic multi-instrumentalist Magical Power Mako.
Other groups Haino has formed include rock duo Fushitsusha in 1978, Aihiyo in 1998,
Vajra (with underground folk singer Kan Mikami and drummer Toshiaki Ishizuka),
Knead (with the avant-prog outfit Ruins), Sanhedolin (with Yoshida Tatsuya of Ruins and Mitsuru Nasuno of Korekyojinn, Altered States and Ground Zero) and a solo project called Nijiumu.
Nijiumu (滲有無) featured Keiji Haino, Asahito Nanjo (who left in 1990), Takashi Matsuoka and Shizuo Uchida.
They created mysterious soundscapes mixing acoustic instruments, electronic treatments and Haino's vocals.
Asahito Nanjo (member of High Rise, Toho Sara) speaks about it in an interview:
"Nijiumu concentrate on creating an atmosphere. There was no clear concept,
sometimes we wouldn't even talk about what we were going to do.
Nijiumu is like Fushitsusha in that it was started with the aim of doing something that no one else had thought of.
It doesn't have any clear philosophy behind it."
Haino has also collaborated with many artists, including Faust, Boris, Derek Bailey,
Bill Laswell, Stephen O'Malley, Jim O'Rourke, John Zorn and John Duncan.
Haino cites a broad range of influences, including troubadour music, Marlene Dietrich,

Iannis Xenakis, Blue Cheer, Syd Barrett, Charlie Parker and Butoh dancing.
NHK, Japan's national broadcaster, banned him from broadcast from 1973 to 2013.
He has been active since the 1970s and continues to record regularly and in new styles.

Old Forest was formed in 1998 and consisted of Kobold (James Fogarty of In the Woods..., Ewigkeit),
 Beleth and Lord Grond (Orcrypt).
With influences from the early 90s classic bands, such as Emperor, Ancient, Darkthrone and Burzum,
Old Forest formed in order to preserve the underground and, by then, lost feeling of cult spirit of Black Metal.
The debut demo "Of Mists And Graves" was self-released, and led to a handfull of offers
from reputable black metal labels to release the debut album.
After the second demo "The Kingdom Of Darkness" was recorded,
Old Forest set about recording their debut album "Into The Old Forest" for the label Mordgrimm Records.
The album was universally hated by commercial magazines,
got terrible reviews and became an instant underground classic.
A second album was recorded in 1999, "None More Black", but this was never released.
The band was placed on hiatus and the master tapes of the unreleased album were buried in the New Forest in Hampshire.
In 2007, Old Forest reactivated once again re-releasing all of their demo recordings as free digital downloads,
to re-aquaint the old fans, and to act as a flag-bearer for a new crusade of anti-commercial Cult Black Metal.
They then began work on writing and recording the "Tales Of The Sussex Weald" trilogy of EPs
for the record label Death To Music Productions.
In 2011, the 3rd and final part of the trilogy was released,
along with parts 1 and 2, on the full-length album "Tales Of The Sussex Weald".
In 2015 the band released their latest album "Dagian" through the Avantgarde Music label
featuring Kobro (In the Woods..., ex-Carpathian Forest) on drums.

Univers Zero – Heresie (1979)

Country: Belgium

Tracklist
1. La Faulx 25:25
2. Jack The Ripper 13:30
3. Vous Le Saurez En Temps Voulu 13:02
4. Chaos Hermétique (Bonus Track Recorded In 1975) 11:52

Univers Zero are an instrumental progressive Belgian band formed in 1974 by drummer Daniel Denis.
The band is known for playing dark music heavily influenced by 20th-century chamber music.
In 1973, Claude Deron and Daniel Denis, both former members of the band Arkham, set up a new group, Necronomicon.
By that time, apart from Deron (trumpet) and Denis (drums), the group consisted of Roger Trigaux (guitar),
Guy Segers (bass guitar), Patrick Hanappier (violin), John Van Rymenant (sax) and later on Vincent Motoulle (keyboards).
At the time, Guy Denis (percussion) took part in some shows and rehearsals
and Jean-Luc Manderlier (keyboards) was present only during rehearsals.
Necronomicon was renamed to Univers Zero in 1974.
The band was part of a musical movement called Rock In Opposition (RIO) which strove to create dense challenging music, a direct contrast to the disco and punk music being produced in the late 1970s.
Obvious early influences were Bartók, Stravinsky and composers such as Albert Huybrechts, who was also Belgian.
Whereas their early albums were almost entirely acoustic, featuring oboes, spinets, harmoniums and Mellotrons,
their 1980s albums tended to rely more on synthesizer and electric guitar, sounding much more electric.
In 1977, they released their first eponymous album "Univers Zéro", later remixed and renamed as "1313".
The album shows a heavy rock and roll approach despite the fact that the instrumentation was largely acoustic.
This is mostly due to the use of drums and bass guitar.
Two years later the album "Heresie" proved to be even darker and more complex.
Subsequent albums lightened the sound only slightly but became ever more electric.
The group disbanded in 1987 but reformed in 1999.
In the interim, drummer Daniel Denis released two solo albums and joined Art Zoyd, a similar band from France.
Since 1999, Univers Zero released five studio albums.
In 2011, they joined forces with Belgian groups Present and Aranis
to form a 17-member ensemble called Once Upon A Time In Belgium.
They premiered at the fourth edition of the Rock In Opposition festival held in Carmaux, France in September 2011,
where they performed "New York Transformations", a work composed by Kurt Budé.
Once Upon A Time In Belgium and Univers Zero appear in the documentary film
"Romantic Warriors II: A Progressive Music Saga About Rock In Opposition".
